When members of the community identified a need for a gardening facility, the New Drop In Centre answered their call by establishing a gardening club. Local volunteers worked together to cut back the hedges and reclaim the land! We have since constructed a polytunnel and raised beds. This caters to people of all ages and abilities. The basis of the project is to empower and enable local residents to share their horticultural knowledge and skills with other like-minded individuals. For those who wish to further their horticultural knowledge, we offer OCN and NVQ's. We currently have a number of volunteers who have mental health issues and find gardening an enjoyable outlet to the frustration their illness brings. Volunteers who come in on a weekly basis do light exercise as well as learn about gardening. This is an excellent example of how gardening can promote health and well-being.
With the first growing season, the produce was given to members of the community to raise awareness for this project. Now that this project has proven successful.
